Granite, Marble or Quartz Counter tops?
Gorgeous Granite
Granite is natural stone made from igneous rock composed of grains of compressed quartz, feldspar, mica and similar materials. This means that granite is slightly harder than marble.
Granite is available in a variety of colours, such as tan, gray, yellow-gold, brown, off white, taupe, peach, blue-gray and black. Granite does have fewer options but instead you are able to have a natural piece(s) of stone in your kitchen or bathroom. Each piece has a unique pattern and look that will never be the same as any others, unlike quartz. Granite is able to withstand spills, hot pans and pots, and is extremely durable. Granite does not chip or scratch easily however it must be sealed. Nevertheless, granite does have a few shortcomings. Since granite is a pure stone it is porous and therefore must be sealed. This protects the stone from staining and repels germs and bacteria from growing in the small crevasses. You must be careful as the sealant can wear down and allow bacteria to grow, but can be avoided by resealing it every three years to ensure its luster and longevity.
Additionally, some types of granite may be dyed, typically with black granites. Be aware of this and ask the manufacturer whether it is dyed or not as after years of use the granite can fade and look quite different.
Colourful Quartz
Quartz is a manufactured countertop that is made from the combination of crushed quartz (93%), colored pigment, and resin (7%) as an adhesive to create a very strong countertop material.
Because of quartz being a manmade product there are multiple options of styles and appearances to choose from. Color, texture and pattern can all be controlled perfectly. Without colour enhancements, natural quartz is somewhat dull and unappealing. The composition of quartz is relatively uniform so it doesn’t have as many natural grains, flecks or veins as granite or marble. Choose quartz if you want a nonporous option that requires zero upkeep and never requires sealing. Quartz is more durable than most stone, marble and granite. It is impervious to stains, scratches and cracks, and is highly heat and cold resistant.
Depending on which manufacturer you buy your quartz countertop from, many of them are able to manufacture it to be extremely hygienic.
Luxurious Marble
Marble is a gorgeous natural stone with similarities to granite. Marble is a metamorphic rock formed from recrystallized carbon. It is formed out of limestone that is subjected to intense pressure and heat due to tectonic shifting in the earth’s crust.
Cost Considerations
Quartz is slightly more expensive than granite and marble is more expensive than granite. Each material is available in a range of quality levels, so research manufacturers, read consumer reviews before you buy and ask family and friends. Look as how they used it and what condition it is in after a few years. Ask them how they like their counter top, if they have ever had any problems or would have chosen something different. From there you are able to make the right decision for your wants and needs in a counter top.
